Biographical Information[edit]

Adrian Valerio peaked at AA and played for the Dominican national team.

He was signed by Pittsburgh Pirates scouts Rene Gayo and Juan Mercado in July 2013. [1] He debuted with the 2014 DSL Pirates, hitting .240/.284/.324 and fielding .943 at short. Coming stateside in 2015, he batted .218/.270/.319. He led Gulf Coast League shortstops in fielding (.959) and led the GCL with 10 sacrifice hits. In '16, he was at .247/.274/.323 and .966 for the Bristol Pirates, pacing Appalachian League shortstops in chances (297) and assists (200). [2]

Moving up to the West Virginia Power in 2017, he improved to .273/.301/.442 with 11 homers. He batted .243/.267/.341 for the 2018 Bradenton Marauders, whacking 26 doubles but having 101 K to 15 BB. He led Florida State League shortstops with 76 double plays. [3] He tied José Osuna and Eric Wood for 6th in the Pirates chain in doubles, tying for 4th in the Florida State League with Riley Adams, Kevin Padlo and Daniel Pinero. In his Dominican Winter League debut in 2018-2019, he was 0 for 3 for the Águilas Cibaeñas.

Valerio split 2019 between Bradenton (.247/.283/.316 in 69 G) and the Altoona Curve (.198/.248/.255 in 33 G); he stole 13 bases in 17 tries for the year. He was 0-for-3 for the 2019-2020 Águilas. Beginning in 2021, he played in the Colombian Winter League. He was with the Dominican team in the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games. Debuting against Nicaragua, he struck out against Osman Gutiérrez his first time up. His first hit was a grand slam off Yoanner Negrín. He finished at .263/.318/.632 with two homers and eight RBI in seven games, fielding 26 chances error-free, for a fine tournament. He tied Roel Santos for second in the Games in dingers, two behind Fernando Villegas Jr. He tied Santos and Emmanuel Ávila for second in RBI (5 behind Villegas) and was second to Derwin Barreto in assists. [4] Remaining with them for the 2023 Pan American Games, he was 0-for-8 and fielded .900. [5]
