Adrián Rodríguez has pitched in Cuba and Russia and for the Russian national team.
He was 1-1 with a 5.66 ERA in 16 games for Isla de la Juventud as a rookie in the 2016-2017 Serie Nacional, walking 18 and hitting six in 20 2/3 IP. In 2017-2018, he had a 4.91 ERA in seven outings. He allowed two runs while retiring no one in 2018-2019.
Rodríguez was one of six Cubans on the Russian team in the 2019 B-Level European Championship, beating Serbia (7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 7 BB, 5 K) despite tying for second in the event in walks issued. [1] In the 2021 European Championship Qualifiers, he struck out two of three batters in a game against Slovenia as Russia won for a spot in the 2021 European Championship. [2] He was the winning pitcher in the final game of the 2021 Russian Series as RusStar won. [3]
The right-hander then was with Russia for the 2021 European Championship. He pitched in their first two games, but not in their last four. In their opener versus Israel, he relieved Petr Balan in the 9th with a 1-1 tie. He struck out Assaf Lowengart, got Jordan Petrushka on a fly and got Itai Goldner looking. In the bottom of the 10th, with two runners aboard due to the WBSC extra-inning rule, he made an error on a bunt by Ophir Katz then whiffed Tal Erel but balked in the losing run. Against Great Britain, he saved Denis Leonov's win, relieving Phillies farmhand Anton Kuznetsov in the 9th with the bases loaded and no one out, Russia up 7-5. Kent Blackstone flew out then Gabriel Rincones Jr. hit a sacrifice fly. He then struck out Ben Andrews for the save. [4]
