Ophir Katz is the son of Haim Katz, who had been president of the Israel Baseball Association. He was 1 for 19 with 7 strikeouts for the Netanya Tigers in the 2007 Israel Baseball League, one of six native Israelis in the league. He was Israel's main first baseman in both the 2008 European Championship Qualifiers and 2011 European Championship Qualifiers. In the first event, he hit .200/.294/.200. He improved the next time out, going 4 for 9 with two doubles, a walk, 2 HBPs and 3 runs. In the finale against Great Britain for a spot in the 2012 European Championship, Katz came up with a 5-2 deficit in the 9th and two outs. With a chance to end it with a homer, Katz was plunked by Michael Johnson. Jesse Sultanik grounded out, though, to end Israel's hopes of advancing.
