History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 1994 San Diego Padres had a very mediocre season, finishing last in the NL West and with the worst record in the league in the strike-shortened year. However, it is now remembered for Tony Gwynn's quest to hit .400. He ultimately fell short, although he was red hot when the season came to an untimely end on August 11th, batting a scorching .475 in the first two weeks of that month. His .394 average for the season is the highest by anyone since Ted Williams became the last batter to top the .400 mark in 1941.
