The 2017 San Diego Padres started the year by losing 30 of their first 45 games, putting out virtually out of any postseason contention by mid-May. It was not that the Padres had any particular hope of being competitive going into the season, as they had deliberately decided to go on a youth kick and were willing to take their lumps in order to accelerate the process by which the players would eventually jell into a solid unit. They did play better after the rough start, as from May 21 to the end of June, they were 18-17.
