The 1937 St. Louis Cardinals were an offensive powerhouse, finishing first in the National League in doubles and stolen bases, second in runs, hits, slugging, OPS and total bases and third in triples and batting average. Their onslaught was led by Joe Medwick, who paced the club in home runs, RBI and batting average (31, 154, .374) and Johnny Mize (25 HR, 125 RBI, .364 BA). Such numbers are becoming of future Hall of Famers; both were. Terry Moore, with 13 stolen bases, led the team in stolen bases. Other .300 hitters included Don Padgett (.314 BA) and Pepper Martin (.304). The team's pitching wasn't as powerful as its offense, but it was hardly mediocre. Despite a 4.53 ERA, Lon Warneke led the club with 18 wins, while future Hall of Famer Dizzy Dean posted a 2.69 mark in 197 1/3 innings. Rookie Tom Sunkel showed promise with a 2.76 mark in 29 1/3 innings, but he never panned out, finishing with a career ERA of 4.53. Despite solid performances in the batters' box and on the rubber, the club finished in just 4th place in the league.
