The 1927 Brooklyn Robins had trouble competing with the other two New York City teams, the Yankees and Giants. While the Yankees won the 1927 World Series and the Giants won 92 games during the regular season, the 'Robins went 65-88. The Yankees hit over .300 as a team and the Giants came close, but the Robins hit .253 and no starter was over .300 (Harvey Hendrick, who was the fourth outfielder and back-up first baseman, hit .310). The Yankees had over 150 home runs and the Giants had over 100, but the Robins hit only 39. Not surprisingly, both the Yankees and Giants drew many more fans than did the Robins.

Babe Herman, at age 24, was the big slugger with 14 home runs and a .481 slugging percentage. Hendrick was the only other hitter with a slugging percentage over .400.

The only position player who became a Hall of Famer was 37-year-old Max Carey, who was still able at that age to lead the team with 32 stolen bases (and finish second in the National League).

The pitching staff featured 36-year-old Dazzy Vance, who led the team with 16 victories and led the starters with a 2.70 ERA (third in the league).

The manager was long-time Brooklyn skipper Wilbert Robinson, in the middle of his 1914-1931 stretch as leader of the Robins. From 1926-1929 he finished sixth in the league four straight times.
