The 1922 St. Louis Cardinals briefly experimented with wearing uniform numbers on their sleeves. The practice, which had first been tried briefly by the 1916 Cleveland Indians, did not last either. Uniform numbers would not become standard until the 1929 season, when the Indians and New York Yankees both adopted the practice.
