History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 1909 Boston Doves finished dead last in the National League, and really they were not really in the same class as the top two teams in the league, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs, as they were a combined 2-41 against the two juggernauts, who both won over 100 games, with exactly one win over each of the two. They changed managers in mid-season, going from Frank Bowerman to Harry Smith but had almost identical records under both managers.

Boston's owner, George Dovey, after whom the team was nicknamed by sportswriters, passed away on June 19th. All National League games were cancelled in mourning on June 22nd, the day of his funeral.
