Biographical Information

Angel Cuan made his debut for the Panamanian national team after having won one minor league game.

Cuan played for Panama in the 2006 World Junior Championship. He was 1-8 for the VSL Mets in 2008 but struck out 74 while walking 11 in 72 innings. He had a 3.13 ERA. He tied for the Venezuelan Summer League lead in losses but also led the loop in strikeouts. In the 2008 Americas Baseball Cup, the southpaw had a 4.05 ERA in three relief appearances, striking out 6 but walking 5 in 6 2/3 IP. He was on Panama's preliminary roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic and posted a 27.00 ERA in the Classic.

Angel split 2009 between the Kingsport Mets (1-3, 4.83) and Brooklyn Cyclones (15 H, 7 R in 8 IP). He was 5th in the Appalachian League with 76 hits allowed. In 2010, he was better with Brooklyn (5-1, 2.03, 64 K) and the St. Lucie Mets (0 R in 4 1/3 IP). He finished second in the New York-Penn League in ERA (.12 behind Yohan Almonte) and was fifth in Ks (between Justin Edwards and Mario Hollands). In the 2010 Pan American Games Qualifying Tournament, he and Eliecer Navarro combined to beat the Dominican national team but Cuan was then lit up by Team Canada; he had a 1-1, 9.34 record for the event.

In 2011, the lefty had a 10-3, 3.56 record for the Savannah Sand Gnats and walked only 16 in 124 innings. He was 10th in the South Atlantic League in ERA (between Keith Couch and Ryan Fraser) and tied for 4th in wins, two behind co-leaders Matt Grace and Taylor Rogers. He tied Brandon Moore and Yoryi Nuez for 4th in the Mets chain in victories. In the 2011 Baseball World Cup, he was 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA for Panama; only Gilberto Mendez was higher. He beat the Taiwan national team despite 8 hits and 4 runs in 5 innings then had a no-decision (2 R, 5 H in 3 IP) against Canada and lost to Cuba (4 H, 5 R, 4 ER in 2 IP).

Cuan fell to 6-10, 4.01 for St. Lucie in 2012. He was third in the Mets chain in losses behind Mark Cohoon and Gonzalez Germen and tied for the Florida State League in losses. He was 0-1 with a 1.80 ERA in the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, losing a 1-0 pitching battle with Rafael Fernándes of Brazil in the finale when Yan Gomes drove in Paulo Orlando.

In 2013, Cuan rebounded to 8-3, 3.57 for St. Lucie and made AA with the Binghamton Mets (0-1, 3 R in 6 IP). In the 2013 Bolivarian Games, he allowed one run in 6 2/3 IP with a win over Venezuela; he was one of only two Panamanians to allow a run in their 7-0 run to take Gold (Edgar Vega was the other one). In 2014, he struggled with St. Lucie (7 R in 9 IP) and Binghamton (3-5, 6.23), seemingly ending his US career.
