Biographical Information

Ángel Calero pitched in Venezuela, the US and Italy.

Calero was 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA for Tronconcero 2 in the 2004 Venezuelan Summer League. He was 2-4 with a 4.03 ERA for the 2005 VSL Mets. He came to the US in 2006 with the GCL Mets but went 2-2 with a 6.83 ERA, walking 23 in 27 2/3 IP. He split 2007 between the Savannah Sand Gnats (2-0, 1.54 in 2 G) and Kingsport Mets (5-1, 2.79). He tied for 8th in the Appalachian League in wins. In winter ball, he was 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA for the Navegantes del Magallanes; with five innings over ten games, he was presumably being used as a LOOGY.

In 2008, he pitched for Savannah (3-5, 2.57 in 12 G) and the St. Lucie Mets (1-1, 7.07). He had a 3-11, 4.61 record for St.Lucie in 2009. He tied for second in the Mets chain in losses and tied for 7th in the Florida State League in that category. With Magallenes in 2009-2010, he was 3-1 with a 7.04 ERA in 18 outings. He was 1-2 with a save and a 5.40 ERA for St. Lucie in 2010 to finish his time in the minors at 21-27, 4.02 in 94 games (64 starts). He pitched 2 2/3 shutout innings in the winter, facing ten batters over five games. Moving to the Leones del Caracas for 2012-2013, he was 3-0 with a 3.03 ERA.

The southpaw moved to Italy's Novara club for 2013, going 4-3 with a 2.74 ERA and 89 K in 65 2/3 IP. He finished 10th in ERA, tied Yorman Bazardo for 10th in wins and led in strikeouts (3 ahead of Tiago da Silva). He had a 6.19 ERA in 25 games that winter for Caracas. The next winter, he was 1-1 with a 6.57 ERA, with 12 1/3 IP over 27 games. Back in Italy, he was 0-1 with four saves and a 1.61 ERA for Padova BSC in 2015, striking out 31 in 22 1/3 IP. He was 4th in the league in saves. In the 2015-2016 LVBP, he was 2-1 with a 3.18 ERA for Caracas, with 25 GP and 11 1/3 IP. Caracas then dealt him with Celis Flames to the Cardenales de Lara for Anderson De La Rosa.

He was 5-4 with a 4.56 ERA for Padova in 2016, tying Raúl Rivero for 6th in wins. He had a 2.08 ERA for Lara in 2016-2017, facing only 38 batters in 25 games for 8 2/3 IP. He was 1-0 with 2 1/3 shutout innings in the postseason. He ended his career in 2017-2018, allowing three runs in 2 2/3 IP for Lara, facing 14 batters over 7 games.
