Biographical Information[edit]
Yuniesky Gourriel is the brother of Yulieski Gourriel and Lourdes Gourriel Jr., the son of Lourdes Gourriel Sr., the nephew of Luis Enrique Gourriel, the great-nephew of José R. Delgado and the cousin of Yoani Delgado. Gourriel is the center fielder for Sancti Spíritus.
Gourriel had played 7 seasons in Cuba through 2006-2007; his batting line was .270/.324/.350 through this time. The outfielder hit .283/.363/.377 and fielded .986 in 2007-2008. In 2008-2009, he batted .305/.375/.474.
In 2014, he was given permission to play for Les Capitales de Québec in the independent Can-Am Association. He hit .321 in 30 games. The following year, 2015, three other Cuban players were allowed to join him on team: Alexei Bell, Yordan Manduley and Ismel Jimenez. He hit a ringing .374/.435/.422 in 69 games, although he had only 10 extra-base hits, 8 of them doubles. He still scored 43 runs and drove in 31. The following January, his two younger brothers defected jointly after playing in the 2016 Caribbean Series, although Yuniesky was now likely too old to seek the same path.
