Biographical Information[edit]

Ismel Jiménez was the ace of the Sancti Spíritus staff in the early part of the 2008-2009 Cuban baseball season.

Jiménez was 22-11 with a 3.24 ERA in his first three seasons. In 2007-2008, he went 12-6 with a 4.74 ERA, tying for 4th in the Serie Nacional in victories. He started 2008-2009 5-1 and was put on Cuba's roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic. In the Classic, he tied Norberto González for the team lead with 4 games pitched. Jiménez was 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA and 7 K in 7 1/3 IP. He got the decision in a 5-4 win over Australia, coming in with a 4-3 deficit and the bases loaded and retiring Brett Roneberg (who was 5 for 6 otherwise in the Classic).

Jiménez finished the 2008-2009 season with a 13-5, 4.26 record. He was third in the league in complete games (6), tied Yuniesky Maya for the win lead, tied Maya, Danny Betancourt and Norge Vera for the shutout lead (2) and was third in innings (126 2/3).

In 2015, he was one of four Cuban players with Les Capitales de Québec of the Can-Am Association; the others were Alexei Bell, Yuniesky Gourriel and Yordan Manduley, and all four had been granted permission by the Cuban government to play abroad. He made 9 starts for Québec, going 3-3, 3.12 in 43 1/3 innings.
