Biographical Information[edit]

Submariner Young-jae Sung pitched in the KBO for 12 years.

Sung was drafted by the Ssangbangwool Raiders in the first round of the 1993 KBO draft, and he was 1-13 with a 4.03 ERA in his first season; he led the league in losses. Sung was 7-10 with a 4.95 ERA in 1994, and he was 5th in losses (5 behind Kang-chul Lee). He went 9-14 with a 5.08 ERA in 1995, and he led the league in losses again. Sung broke out in 1996, and he improved to 10-5 with a 2.37 ERA. He was 4th in ERA, between Dae-jin Lee and Kang-chul Lee. He was 5-6 with a 2.43 ERA in 1997, and he had a 7-9 record with a 3.51 ERA in 1998.

The Gwangju native slumped to 5-16 with a 6.10 ERA in 1999, and he led the league in losses for the third time in his career. Sung was then traded to the Haitai Tigers for Ho-joon Lee, and he went 7-7 with a 4.84 ERA in 2000. He was 5-4 with a 5.72 ERA in 2001, and the Tigers released him after the 2002 season. He signed with the Doosan Bears, but they released him after he pitched one game for them. The LG Twins picked him up, and Sung announced his retirement after having a 3.46 ERA in 16 games in 2004. He was a minor league coach of the Twins from 2006 to 2008, and he became their bullpen coach from 2009 to 2010. Sung coached Gwangju Jeil High School from 2016 to 2021, and he became a scout for the Twins in 2022.

Overall, Sung was 58-85 with a 4.24 ERA, struck out 707 and pitched 1,165 1/3 innings in 12 seasons in the KBO.
