Biographical Information

Yeison Asencio has been a minor league outfielder.

Asencio was signed by San Diego Padres scouts Randy Smith, Felix Feliz and Martin Jose for a $135,000 bonus in July 2009. At the time, he claimed a 1992 birth year and the name Yoan Alcantara. He hit .241/.332/.395 for the DSL Padres in 2010, his pro debut. He dazzled in the US with the 2011 AZL Padres, batting .348/.367/.586 with 50 runs, 46 RBI, 8 triples and 7 home runs in 50 games. He was 8th in the Arizona League in average, 7th in slugging, 9th in OPS, 1st in runs (5 ahead of Devin Shines, the runner-up), second in hits (73, 4 behind Gioskar Amaya), tied for third in triples, tied for third in home runs behind Jose Cuevas and Duenal Jones, tied for first in RBI (with Cuevas and Joe Winker) and led in total bases (123). He joined Winker and Kelvin Rojas as the league's All-Star outfielders. Baseball America listed "Alcantara" as the AZL's top prospect, unaware as he really three years older than claimed, which would almost definitely have lowered his ranking. In November, Asencio's fake identity became known.

Asencio got a visa under his real name and birthyear in May 2012. He had a productive summer with the Fort Wayne TinCaps, hitting .323/.353/.474. He was 8th in the Midwest League in slugging (between O'Koyea Dickson and Ramon Morla) and first in average (.007 ahead of #2 Jordan Smith) but did not make the top-20 prospect list or the league All-Star team as a one-dimensional offensive threat. He did have 21 outfield assists. He started 2013 on a similar note with the Lake Elsinore Storm (.296/.319/.457 in 57 G), earning a promotion to the AA San Antonio Missions. He then got named to the 2013 Futures Game.
