Biographical Information[edit]

NOTE: There is inconsistency in the sources about Willie Romero's name. English language sources always use "Willie" while Spanish language sources use "Willie" and "Wilfredo A" when writing about the same person. "Wilson" is not used in any sources. There is also a Wilfredo A. Romero who played in Venezuela from 2006-2012. This biography is about the Willie Romero from Maracay, Venezuela who played from 1993-2012.

Willie Romero played in the Los Angeles Dodgers minor league system from 1993-1998. He also played briefly for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001 and Baltimore Orioles in 2003 at the AAA level. The remaining years of his career Romero played in the Mexican League with various teams, most prominently the Leones de Yucatán.

During his final season in 2012, the Leones named him a player/manager on May 1st to begin his lengthy coaching and managerial career. Romero managed the Acereros de Monclova in 2013 before taking a coaching job with the Tigres de Quintana Roo in 2014. He returned to Yucatán to manage in 2015 and remained in that role until he was fired on July 15, 2017.

The San Francisco Giants hired Romero in 2018 as a hitting coach for the San Jose Giants. After a one year stint in San Jose, Romero was named fundamentals coach for the Augusta GreenJackets in 2019. He was slated to return to Augusta in 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic caused the minor league season to be cancelled.

Romero returned to Mexico in 2021 as the hitting coach for the expansion Mariachis de Guadalajara. He moved back to managing in 2022 with the Pericos de Puebla. After the season Pericos management made it clear that Romero would not be invited back and that they would hire a manager of Mexican origins for the following season.

Romero came back to the United States as the hitting coach for the Inland Empire 66ers in 2023 and manager of the Tri-City Dust Devils in 2024.

Romero also has considerable experience coaching in winter leagues.

Romero also served as an assistant hitting coach for Venezuela in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
