Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Will Scalzitti hit a grand slam to lead the Bend Rockies to victory in the first game the history of the Colorado Rockies organization in 1992. Colorado had taken Scalzitti in the 6th round of the 1992 amateur draft, the second position player they ever took. He had a productive first season, hitting .287/.345/.448 with 7 homers and 40 RBI in 65 games. His 16 doubles were two shy of Northwest League leader Mark Sobolewski. He did have 20 passed balls, though.
He played in the Colorado system through 1996, peaking at AAA in 1994, although only playing one game there. He spend most of his career in advanced A ball. In '93, Scalzitti fell to .242/.292/.306 for the Central Valley Rockies, with only two homers in 248 at-bats. He bounced around in '94, appearing for Central Valley 9.253/.299/.387 in 81 G, 15 PB, Opp SB 40$), the New Haven Ravens (7 for 30, HR) and Colorado Springs Sky Sox (0 for 1, K). He tied Todd Greene for the most passed balls in the California League.
In '95, Will played for the Ravens (.187/.250/.260 in 39 G) and Salem Avalanche (7 for 35, 2B, 4 BB). He wrapped up his career in '96 with Salem (.196/.244/.315 in 81 G) and New Haven (6 for 26, 2 2B). That year, he was barely catching, with Blake Barthol behind the plate primarily for Salme, with Scalzitti being used as a backup OF-1B.
His father, Terry Scalzitti, played in the minor leagues in the 1950s.
