Biographical Information[edit]
Wilfredo Hidalgo was the main catcher for the Philippines in their first global tournament, the 2001 Baseball World Cup. He was 2 for 5 with a walk as one of their better hitters and allowed 8 steals in 9 tries in 19 innings behind the plate.He was 0 for 5 in the 2002 Asian Games, splitting catching with Junnifer Pinero. His next event was the 2003 Asian Championship. He won Gold with the Philippines in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games. In the 2006 Intercontinental Cup, the veteran batted .235/.278/.294 while splitting catching duties with Pinero; he also played the outfield at times. He also was in the 2006 Asian Games.
Hidalgo was 0 for 4 with two strikeouts as a DH and OF in the 2007 Asian Championship. He won Silver in the 2007 Southeast Asian Games. He coached for the Philippines in the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers and 2019 Asian Championship.
