Biographical Information[edit]

Wilberto Ortiz played in the minor leagues and for the Puerto Rico national baseball team.

Ortiz was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 33rd round of the 2006 Amateur Draft, and he hit .299/.378/.372 for the AZL Angels in his first year. He collected 21 steals with a .277/.330/.387 batting line for the Cedar Rapids Kernels, and he had a .268/.307/.377 batting line in 60 games for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in 2008. Ortiz also spent some of the '08 season with the AA Arkansas Travelers, and he hit .264/.312/.343 in 67 games. He then had a .115/.148/.231 batting line for the Gigantes de Carolina in winter ball. Ortiz's batting line was .258/.321/.301 with 15 doubles for the Travelers in 2009, and he hit .236/.274/.371 in Carolina in the winter.

The Guayama native signed with the Washington Nationals in 2010, and he batted .253/.306/.341 in 47 games for the Potomac Nationals. He led the 2010-2011 Puerto Rican League with 13 doubles. The Los Angeles Dodgers then signed him, and Ortiz had a solid .321/.440/.450 batting line for the Adv-A class Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. However, he struggled in higher levels, and he only hit .222/.306/.357 in AA and .125/.276/.208 in AAA. He then represented Puerto Rico in the 2011 Baseball World Cup (going 0-for-13 and fielding .938 as a backup middle infielder) and 2011 Pan American Games (2 for 9, BB, R, nine error-free chances as their main second baseman). The '11 season was his last season in organized baseball, and he batted .191/.301/.236 in Carolina in the winter. Ortiz played for three independent teams in 2012; he hit .245/.312/.367 for the Long Island Ducks, .286/.338/.524 for the Wichita Wingnuts and .212/.288/.442 for the Lincoln Saltdogs. He recorded a .271/.325/.371 batting line for the Atenienses de Manati in Puerto Rico, and his professional career ended.
