Red Lanning is the only major leaguer ever to come out of Wesleyan University. However, Jeffrey Maier came in for his own share of major league fame when, as a 12-year-old Yankee fan in 1996 during an American League Championship Series, he deflected a ball that might well have become a home run for the Orioles. Ten years later, he became a big star on the Wesleyan baseball team, and set the school career record with 189 hits.
Future Padres GM Jed Hoyer was a star reliever here. Collin Andrews, Nick Miceli, and John Vrooman went here as well, as did historian and linguist Paul Dickson.
