Biographical Information

Relief pitcher Nick Greenwood made his major league debut in 2014.

He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 14th round of the 2009 amateur draft and began his professional career with a bang, going 4-1 with a 1.63 ERA in 20 games (9 starts) between the Eugene Emeralds and Fort Wayne TinCaps. He was named a Northwest League Post-Season All-Star for his work. He began 2010 in the Padres system, but on July 31 was part of a three-team trade involving the Padres, St. Louis Cardinals and Cleveland Indians. The Padres sent Greenwood to the Cardinals and pitcher Corey Kluber to the Indians. The Cardinals sent outfielder Ryan Ludwick to the Padres and the Indians sent pitcher Jake Westbrook to the Cardinals.

He was ho-hum after joining the Cardinals system, posting a 4.59 ERA in 2011, a 4.40 mark in 2012 and a 4.93 ERA in 2013. He began 2014 with their Triple-A team, the Memphis Redbirds, and was called up to St. Louis in mid-June, making his debut on June 16th. In his debut, he earned a win against the New York Mets with 3 1/3 innings of relief in a 6-2 win. He had replaced starter Carlos Martinez in the top of the 5th with a 2-1 lead, then benefited from a four-run outburst in the bottom of the inning, and gave way to Randy Choate in the 8th, having given up a run on two hits and a walk in a solid outing.

Greenwood became an assistant coach at Wesleyan University in 2021.
