Biographical Information[edit]

Wei-Chieh Huang pitched for the Taiwan national team before making his major league debut in 2019.

Huang was the first Taiwanese amateur ever signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks; scout Mack Hayashi signed him for a $500,000 bonus July 21, 2014. He had been on the Taiwanese roster for the 2014 U-21 Baseball World Cup but Arizona did not grant permission for him to play. His pro debut in 2015 was delayed by back problems.

Huang went 7-3 with a 2.00 ERA and 0.97 WHIP for the 2015 Kane County Cougars. He would have led the Midwest League in ERA had he qualified and tied Austin Gomber for the best WHIP. He made the 2015 Futures Game, after no Taiwanese player was picked in 2014 (from 2006-2013, there had been at least one player each year from Taiwan). He relieved Edwin Diaz in the 4th with the World team down 5-1, one on and one out. He got Bradley Zimmer and Tony Kemp to end the inning, then was replaced by Jairo Labourt. The World team lost, 10-2.

Huang then joined Taiwan for the 2015 Asian Championship; they would win the Silver Medal. He pitched one game, facing political nemesis China. He struck out five in seven shutout innings, allowing only two hits (to Chuang Na and Zan Cheng) and two walks (both to Shunyi Yang) to get the win. Ping-Hsueh Chen and Kuo-Hua Lo wrapped up the two-hit whitewash.

He throws a fastball (peak 95 mph), curveball, slider, changeup and sinker.
