Team Bio[edit]
The Waynesboro Generals are a Summer Collegiate Baseball team playing in the Valley Baseball League, one of the nation's oldest summer collegiate baseball leagues. The Generals play their home games at Kate Collins Field on the campus of Wofford College in Waynesboro, VA. Formed in 1954 as one of the founding members of the Valley Baseball League, the Generals performed poorly and folded after the 1955 season. The Generals would not return to Waynesboro again until 1965. The Generals would continue to have difficulties for some time. The Waynesboro Generals did not actually bring in their first winning season until 1974, when they were defeated in the championship by the team from Shenandoah, VA. The Generals would become a staple in the VBL playoffs through the end of the 1970's. In 1984, the Waynesboro Generals won their first VBL title. Since that point, the Generals have had both good and bad seasons, earning several more VBL championships. The Generals invest heavily in active recruiting, and have hosted collegiate athletes from throughout the United States.
The Waynesboro Generals are like every other summer college baseball team, in that they are dedicated and designed to provide minor league-style competition for NCAA players that wish to continue on into professional baseball. The Generals operate in the model of an Independent Minor League team: recruiting athletes, playing nightly before fans in stadiums which seat thousands, using wood bats and minor league specification equipment and experiencing road trips between games. Like all other summer collegiate players, Waynesboro Generals athletes are unpaid in order to maintain their NCAA eligibility, and live with host families in the same manner as Single A and Independent League players.
