Biographical Information

Warren Schaeffer played parts of two seasons at AAA, then went into coaching.

Amateur Career

Warren hit .513 as a high school freshman, .534 as a junior (missing his sophomore year due to injury) and .554 as a senior. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette named him their East Player of the Year his senior year. He was a starter at shortstop for all four seasons of college at Virginia Tech, hitting .275/.318/.365 his first year, followed by campaigns of .234/.288/.322, .286/.351/.389 and .292/.351/.402. He fielded .953. The Colorado Rockies, behind scout Jay Matthews, took him in the 38th round of the 2007 amateur draft, one round after they selected Niko Gallego.

Minor League Playing Career

Schaeffer split 2007 between the Casper Rockies (.187/.268/.216 in 44 G) and Tri-City Dust Devils (0 for 4). He fielded .965 at short for Casper, where he was the primary starter. He played all of 2008 with the Asheville Tourists, batting .226/.283/.321 and appearing in at least 15 games at each infield slot. He hit .218/.263/.297 as a bench player for the 2009 Modesto Nuts. The light-hitting infielder split 2010 between the Tulsa Drillers (.238/.290/.296 in 69 G) and Colorado Springs Sky Sox (.252/.306/.398 in 34 G). In 2011, he was again with Tulsa (.139/.238/.185 in 44 G) and Colorado Springs (.277/.299/.385 in 26 G). He finished his playing career with the 2012 Drillers, hitting only .189/.250/.232 in 80 games. Defense remained his strong suit, as he fielded .974 at short.

Overall, the Pennsylvanian had hit .214/.273/.285 in 461 minor league games, with 161 runs and 137 RBI. He fielded .971 in 211 games at short, .965 in 108 games at 3B, .987 in 80 games at 2B and .994 in 44 games at first. He also pitched four games, with 10 hits, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts and 8 runs in 4 innings.

Coaching Career

Schaeffer was the hitting coach for the Tri-City Dust Devils in 2013-2014, then became a manager with the Asheville Tourists in 2015-2017. He moved up to the Hartford Yard Goats for 2018-2019. He was scheduled to manage the Albuquerque Isotopes in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. Schaeffer did manage the Isotopes in 2021-2022. After the 2022 season Schaeffer managed the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League.

In late 2022 the Colorado Rockies promoted Schaeffer to the major league coaching staff to serve as the third base and infield coach in 2023. Schaeffer retained this role in 2024.
