Walter Vargas has been a shortstop for the Santa Cruz club in Bolivia. He played for the Bolivian national team in the 2009 Bolivarian Games, 2011 South American Championship and 2012 South American Championship. He was 2 for 12 with two walks, a double, run and team-high two RBI in the 2016 South American Championship. He led the team's pitchers (more than 1 IP) in ERA (9.95). He took losses against Chile in both the round-robin and in a complete game in the 5th/6th place game (15 H, 3 BB, 2 K, 9 R, 8 ER in 8 IP). He tied Kevin Yamamoto, Horacio Acosta and Jonathan Farías for the tournament lead in losses despite being his staff's ace.
