Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Tyler Kolek was selected by the Miami Marlins and scout Ryan Wardinsky in the first round of the 2014 amateur draft, with the second overall pick. He was actually the top pick to sign a contract that year, as number one overall pick Brady Aiken could not come to an agreement with the Houston Astros. He made his pro debut that summer with the GCL Marlins, going 0-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 9 games.

He played in the minors until 2019, missing the 2016 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, but never fulfilled the lofty expectations that were attached to him when he was drafted. He peaked in Class A, going 4-10, 4.56 in 25 starts for the Greensboro Grasshoppers of the South Atlantic League in 2015, before his injury, and then making 9 appearances in relief for the Clinton LumberKings of the Midwest League in his final season. The remainder of his career was spent at the Rookie-class level or in short-season A ball.

His younger brother, Stephen Kolek, reached the majors in 2024.
