Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Stephen Kolek was taken by the San Diego Padres from the Seattle Mariners in the 2023 Rule V Draft. He made his major league debut in the second game of the season-opening series between the Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers played in Seoul, South Korea, on March 21, 2024. In two-thirds of an inning, he gave up two runs on a walk and a hit-by-pitch, a performance that was not too much out of line in a game that finished with a score of 15-11 in the Padres' favor.

He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 11th round of the 2018 amateur draft out of Texas A&M University. He was part of the Aggies team that played in the 2017 College World Series. After being forced to sit out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic, he was traded to the Mariners and spent the 2021-2023 seasons in their system. He was 6-13, 4.51 as a starter for the AA Arkansas Travelers in 2022, but was moved to the bullpen in 2023, when he went 4-2, 4.23 in 41 games for the AAA Tacoma Rainiers after 5 games with Arkansas. The Padres claimed him in the Rule V draft on December 6th when the Mariners failed to promote him to their 40-man roster following the season.

He is the brother of Tyler Kolek.
