Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Tyler Black was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in Competitive Balance Round A of the 2021 amateur draft, with the 33rd overall pick, out of Wright State University. Born in Toronto, ON, he hit .353 and .383 in his two full seasons at Wright State, bracketing the 2020 season which was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He began his pro career in 2021 with the ACL Brewers Blue, then after three games was promoted to the Carolina Mudcats of the Low-A East. Altogether, he hit .241/.426/.322, his OBP being boosted by 26 walks in as many games. In 2022, he played 64 games for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of the Midwest League, hitting.281/.406/.424, before playing in the Arizona Fall League. He was named a Brewers organizational All-Star after the season. In 2023, he played 123 games between the AA Biloxi Shuckers and AAA Nashville Sounds, hitting .284/.417/.513. His ability to coax walks was unchanged, but he now added some power to this, with 25 doubles, 12 triples and 18 homers, and also displayed excellent speed with 105 runs and 55 stolen bases. He was once again named an organizational All-Star, was a Southern League All-Star, and shared Brewers Minor League Player of the Year honors with Jackson Chourio.

He headed to spring training with the Brewers in 2024 ready to compete for a starting job at the major league level, alongside Chourio. Chourio did win a job, but Tyler was assigned to AAA Nashville, where he hit .303 in 25 games, with 5 homers and 18 RBIs. He was called up to Milwaukee on April 30th and made his major league debut that day. He was not in the starting line-up against the Tampa Bay Rays, but replaced DH Gary Sanchez as a pinch-runner in the 1st inning when Sanchez injured himself in reaching base on a force-out. He then went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored in an 8-2 win for a successful debut.
