Trevor Hoffman Award
The Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year Award was introduced by Major League Baseball in 2014, in parallel with the Mariano Rivera Award in the American League, following the retirement of Mariano Rivera at the end of the 2013 season, replacing the Rolaids Relief Award, which was discontinued after the 2012 season, and the Delivery Man of the Year Award. Its aim is to honor the best relief pitcher in the National League and is named in honor of Trevor Hoffman, who holds the record for most lifetime saves in the senior circuit. Collectively, the Mariano Rivera Award and the Trevor Hoffman Award are known as the MLB Reliever of the Year Award.
The Award was originally awarded through a vote on by a committee of 9 former elite relief pitchers. They were Mariano Rivera and Trevor Hoffman, the two awards' namesakes, as well as Dennis Eckersley, Rollie Fingers, Rich Gossage and Bruce Sutter - the four living relievers in the Hall of Fame at the time, Hoyt Wilhelm having passed away - and John Franco, Lee Smith and Billy Wagner.
The first award was handed out after the 2014 season with Craig Kimbrel of the Atlanta Braves the first winner. In 2017, he became the first pitcher to win both the Trevor Hoffman Award and the Mariano Rivera Award, while Kenley Jansen became the first repeat winner of the Trevor Hoffman Award. Edwin Díaz has since joined Kimbrel in winning both leagues' respective award.
