Biographical Information

Trevor Gretzky was drafted in 2011. His father Wayne Gretzky was considered by some to be the best hockey player ever, while his mother Janet Jones played a pitcher in "A League of Their Own". Trevor played hockey briefly as a youth, but enjoyed baseball and football more. He exlained that his father was a baseball fanatic and fully supported his choice of preferred sport. A first baseman, he was picked by the Chicago Cubs in the 7th round of the 2011 amateur draft, instantly drawing news coverage not typical for a pick from that round. Gretzky, like his father, wears number 99. The elder Gretzky approved of Trevor going to the Cubs, saying the team had "maybe the greatest Canadian baseball player ever, Ferguson Jenkins." The scout was Steve Fuller.

Gretzky made his pro debut in 2012 as an outfielder with the AZL Cubs. He only hit .171/.341/.229 in his first 14 pro games, with no RBI. The bright spot was 8 walks, but he improved after his tough start, ending up at .304/.372/.330 in 35 games. In 2013, he played 27 games for the Boise Hawks, where he hit .256/.281/.291, and 14 with the Kane County Cougars, where he hit .306/.333/.408 with his first homer as a pro. His combined batting line was .274/.300/.333. On March 20, 2014, the Cubs traded him to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for Matt Scioscia, son of Angels manager Mike Scioscia, who had completely failed to hit in three seasons as a pro and would likely have been released had it not been for the trade that brought Trevor back to his hometown.

In 2014, Gretzky played for the Orem Owlz of the Pioneer League and Burlington (IA) Bees of the Midwest League, getting a total of 61 games and 221 at-bats during which he hit .241 - .429 for Orem but only .201 for Burlington. he hit 3 homers and drove in 19 runs. He was back at Burlington to start the 2015 season.
