The number 99 is most associated with hockey great Wayne Gretzky (and is in fact retired throughout hockey in his honor) but has also been worn by some major leaguers. It was also worn by fictional ballplayer Ricky Vaughn in the 1989 movie Major League and has been adopted by some players in his honor.
