Travis Schlichting, who was for several years a minor-league third baseman, became a major league pitcher. He broke in with the Los Angeles Dodgers for two games in 2009, and came back as a reliever in 2010, but this was his only time in the majors.

Schlichting was born in Denver, CO and went to high school in Round Rock, TX. He was a fourth-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 2003 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Jonathan Bonifay and spent 2003 to 2005 as a third baseman in the Devil Rays' organization. In 2005, in Single A ball, he hit .252 with 13 stolen bases and 19 doubles.

The Rays traded him to the Anaheim Angels after the 2005 season, and he spent some of the 2006 season with the Cedar Rapids Kernels as a third baseman and first baseman, although he also pitched five games in the rookie league giving up 0 runs in 7 2/3 innings. In March 2007 the Angels released him and he played in 2007 in an independent league where he appeared in 41 games as a pitcher along with a few games at third base and first base.

Dodgers' scouting director Logan White had seen Schlichting pitch once in high school, and Texas area scout Chris Smith worked him out. The Dodgers signed him in November 2007 and put him in 2008 with the Jacksonville Suns in AA ball. With Jacksonville he appeared in 33 games, posting an ERA of 3.77.

In 2009 he spent time at almost every level of the Dodgers organization, appearing in 1 game at the rookie league level, 10 at Double A, 13 at Triple A and 2 at the major league level. His ERA at each level of the minors that year was under 1.50.

He was back at Albuquerque for most of the first half of the 2010, but came up to the Dodgers and pitched quite effectively in his first 7 games for them, putting up an ERA of 1.69.
