Biographical Information[edit]

Tony Mounce pitched 11 games at age 28 for the Texas Rangers in 2003. He started all of the games, and pitched a total of 50 2/3 innings. While his 7.11 ERA sounds very high, it wasn't all that much higher than the team's overall ERA that year of 5.67. His teammate Colby Lewis had 26 starts and posted an ERA of 7.30.

Tony was born in Sacramento, CA and graduated from Kamiakin High School in Kennewick, WA in south-central Washington state. He was picked in the 7th round of the 1994 Amateur Draft by the Houston Astros. He was in the Houston organization during 1994-1999.

Mounce looked good during his first three years in the minors with ERAs well under 3.00. Moved up to AA ball in 1997, his ERA was less impressive, and he continued to struggle in 1998, split between A+ and AA ball. He looked better in 1999, with an overall 3.52 ERA mostly in relief split between AA and AAA level teams, although his WHIP was a bit high.

Released by the Astros, he signed with the Texas Rangers and pitched 32 games in 2000, mostly in relief, for the Oklahoma RedHawks for whom he put up an ERA of 5.66. He did not pitch in the majors or minors in 2001, likely due to injury. In 2002 he found himself pitching at four levels in the minors: four games for the A Savannah Sand Gnats, 11 games for the A+ Port Charlotte Rangers, 11 games for the AA Tulsa Drillers and 2 games for the AAA RedHawks. He put up an overall ERA of 3.19, mostly as a starter at age 27.

In 2003, he looked good with the AA Frisco RoughRiders, with a 1.43 ERA in 9 games, and also was decent for the AAA RedHawks, putting up a 3.39 ERA in 11 games. He made his big league debut on June 13th, starting four games that month, four in July, and three in September.

Tony played in Japan in 2004 for the Yakult Swallows, starting 12 games and posting a 3-6 record and a 6.05 ERA. He came back to pitch 6 games in relief in independent ball in 2006 in the USA, which were his last games as a pro.
