Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Tommy Romero was a 15th-round pick by the Seattle Mariners in the 2017 amateur draft, out of Eastern Florida State College. In his senior season, he led the NJCAA Division I in strikeouts with 136 and put up an ERA of 1.13. In his first professional season in 2017, he went 5-1, 2.08 in 13 games for the AZL Mariners, striking out 51 batters in 43 1/3 innings. He was promoted to the Clinton LumberKings of the Class A Midwest League to start the 2018 season and went 3-3, 2.45 over his first 9 starts. On May 25th of that year, less than a full year after having been drafted, he was included in a major trade, as he joined another young pitcher, Andrew Moore, on his way to the Tampa Bay Rays in return for two established major leaguers, OF Denard Span and P Alex Colome. He was immediately assigned to the Bowling Green Hot Rods.

When Romero made his major league debut with the Rays on April 12, 2022, as the starting pitcher against the Oakland Athletics, he was facing another pitcher making his major league debut in Adam Oller. Neither pitcher figured in the decision - and neither completed the 2nd inning - as the Rays won a wild game, 9-8.
