Biographical information

Tommy Mendonca is a former third baseman who is most notable for winning the 2008 College World Series Most Outstanding Player award while a sophomore at Fresno State University. He is the only player from Fresno State University to win that award. Mendonca played for the USA in the 2008 World University Championship (going 4 for 4 in the US's 1-0 win in the Gold Medal game against Japan) and 2008 Haarlem Baseball Week.

In 67 games with Fresno in 2007, Mendonca hit .281 with 10 home runs and 37 RBI. In 77 games in 2008, he hit .285 with 19 homers and 70 RBI.

Mendonca was picked by the Texas Rangers with the 62nd overall pick of the 2009 amateur draft, a second-round selection. He was signed by scout Butch Metzger and made his pro debut on June 30 with the Spokane Indians, going 0 for 1. He played for the Low Single-A Spokane Indians (49 games) and High Single-A Bakersfield Blaze (11 games) that year, hitting a combined .290 with nine home runs and 28 RBI in 60 games. In 2010, he hit .248 with 10 home runs and 47 RBI in 120 games for the Blaze and in 2011, he hit .278 with 25 home runs, 78 RBI and 160 strikeouts in 125 games for the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders. He was a Texas League All-Star in 2011. He split the 2012 campaign between the RoughRiders (28 games) and Round Rock Express (63 games), hitting a combined .229 with 12 home runs and 51 RBI in 91 games.

Mendonca was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the Triple-A phase of the 2012 Rule 5 draft, but he did not play in their organization. Rather, he began the 2013 season with the Camden Riversharks of the independent Atlantic League, before being signed by the Philadelphia Phillies and playing for the Reading Fightin Phils. Combined, he hit .263/.320/.356 with 1 home run and 22 RBI in 48 games. In 2014, he was with the independent Sioux City Explorers, hitting .250/.308/.347 in 95 games and in 90 games with the club in 2015, he batted .311/.373/.424. Mendonca hit .254/.366/.380 with eight home runs and 61 RBI in 97 games for Sioux City in 2016. With the Lincoln Saltdogs in 2017, he hit .291/.358/.462 with 6 home runs and 28 RBI in 49 games. Between the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks and Winnipeg Goldeyes in 2018, he hit .270/.340/.441 in 38 games.

Miscellany

Prior to attending FSU, he attended Turlock High School. In 2006, he hit .429 with six home runs.

His uncle, Robert Mendonca, played in the Philadelphia Phillies organization.
