Biographical Information[edit]

Tomio Tanaka pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 10 years.

Tanaka was selected by the Nippon Ham Fighters, Lotte Orions and Hiroshima Carp in the third round of the 1981 NPB draft, and the Fighters won the lottery for his rights. He joined the rotation in 1983, and he was 4-6 with a 4.23 ERA. Tanaka had a 8-13 record with a 4.81 ERA in 1984, and he was 2nd in the Pacific League in losses (1 behind Osamu Higashio). He was also selected into the 1984 NPB All-Star Games, and he gave up a RBI single to Tsutomu Wakamatsu in the 6th inning of Game 1. Tanaka was 8-11 with a 5.16 ERA in 1985, then he recorded a 4.55 ERA in 27 games in 1986. However, his ERA rose to 5.20 in 1987.

The Fighters then traded him with Tatsuo Omiya to the Chunichi Dragons for Yasunori Oshima and Yasuji Sota. Tanaka had a 4.70 ERA as a reliever in 1988, then he improved to 3.72 ERA in 16 games in 1989. However, he struggled in 1990 as his ERA was 6.16, and he only played 2 games in 1991. Tanaka's ERA was 3.42 in 16 appearances in 1992, then he announced his retirement after the 1993 season.

Overall, Tanaka was 28-45 with a 4.73 ERA, struck out 345 and pitched 713 2/3 innings in 10 years in NPB.
