Biographical Information

Timo Perez was signed by the Hiroshima Carp out of their academy in the Dominican Republic in 1996. He had batted .340 for the Carp's Dominican Summer League team in 1994. Perez reached the top team his first year, batting .278/.304/.352 with 1 HR and 7 RBI. Perez received more playing time the following season, playing in 86 games in 1997 batting .245/.295/.367 with 3 HR's and 15 RBI and batted .296/.350/.404 with 5 HR's and 35 RBI in 1998. In Perez's last year in Japan, 1999, though, he only played in 12 games, batting .173/.269/.174 with 0 HR's and 2 RBI.

After leaving the Carp, Perez signed a deal with the New York Mets in 2000. There he spent most of the year with the Mets' AAA Norfolk Tides squad, posting a line of .357/.392/.512, earning him a call-up to the big league roster late in the year, batting .286/.333/.469 with 1 HR and 3 RBI. Perez even was named to the Mets NLDS, NLCS and World Series rosters that year. Timo played in 85 games in 2001, batting .247/.287/.356 with 5 HR's and 22 RBI. He had a career year in 2002, hitting .295/.331/.437 with 8 HR's and 47 RBI in 136 games. Perez's numbers dropped in his last year in New York, in 2003, when he fell to .269/.301/.364 with 4 HR's and 42 RBI.

As a result, Perez was traded to the Chicago White Sox late during spring training in 2004 for pitcher Matt Ginter. In his first year in Chicago, Perez batted .246/.285/.338 with 5 HR's and 40 RBI in 103 games. In 2005, he was used off the bench as a backup outfielder, batting .218/.266/.296 with 2 HR's and 15 RBI. He made his second World Series squad with the White Sox that year. Perez was let go by the White Sox following the 2005 World Series.

In early February 2006, the Cincinnati Reds signed Timo Perez to a minor league contract. The Cardinals acquired Perez from the Reds on April 21st for cash. Perez batted .295/.349/.515 with 13 HR's and 41 RBI with the AAA Memphis Redbirds. In 23 games with the Cardinals, he batted .194/.286/.323 with 1 HR and 3 RBI.

The Detroit Tigers signed Perez to a minor league contract on January 5, 2007. He started the season with the Toledo Mud Hens of the International League and was voted Most Valuable Player of the 2007 AAA All-Star Game. He was recalled by the Tigers on July 19th when Marcus Thames was placed on the disabled list. He was hitting .322 with 33 doubles and 10 home runs and had already scored 64 runs in 91 games at the time. Perez made the IL All-Star team in the outfield, joining Ben Francisco, Shelley Duncan and Justin Ruggiano. In 29 games with the Tigers, Perez batted .389/.427/.533 with 0 HR's and 13 RBI.

With another set of Tigers, the Licey Tigers, Perez was on the 2008 Caribbean Series winner. He hit .222/.200/.533 in 3 games for Licey, splitting DH duties with fellow veteran Jose Offerman.

In October 2011, Perez was suspended for 50 games for a positive test for Ritalinic Acid and Methylphenidate.
