December 19: Today's featured birthday is that of Chito Martinez, who turns 59.
- 1929 - The Phillies walk Mel Ott five times so that he cannot catch Philadelphia's Chuck Klein in the home run race; Klein wins it with 43 to Ott's 42.
- 1941 - With two outs in the 9th inning of Game 4 of the 1941 World Series, Mickey Owen (pictured) drops a would-be strike three from Hugh Casey, giving the Yankees another chance. New York rallies to score four runs and win the game.
- 1947 - The Dodgers tie the Yankees at three games apiece in the 1947 World Series as outfielder Al Gionfriddo robs Joe DiMaggio of a home run.
- 1951 - Shigeya Iijima hits two grand slams and a three-run homer to set NPB records for grand slams and RBI in one game.
- 1953 - The Yankees win the 1953 World Series for a record fifth straight World Series title. Billy Martin singles in the game-winner in the bottom of the 9th inning for his 12th hit of this Fall Classic.
