December 24: Today's featured birthday is that of John Costello, who turns 64.
- 1927 - The Pittsburgh Pirates deal future Hall of Fame outfielder Kiki Cuyler (who had fallen into the manager's doghouse) to the Chicago Cubs for Sparky Adams and Pete Scott.
- 1938 - 15-game winner Monty Stratton has his right leg amputated following a hunting accident. He will attempt a comeback but will not return to the major leagues.
- 1958 - Shigeru Chiba becomes manager of the Kintetsu Pearls. The team's fans will change the club's name to the Kintetsu Buffalo (and later Buffaloes) in honor of Chiba's nickname.
- 1969 - Masayuki Nagayasu of the Nishitetsu Lions is banned for life from Nippon Pro Baseball, the first player so penalized, for throwing games. The scandal will become revealed to be widespread over the next couple of years and become known as the Black Mist Scandal.
- 1972 - The Los Angeles Dodgers send Frank Robinson, Bobby Valentine, Bill Singer, Bill Grabarkewitz and Mike Strahler to the California Angels for Andy Messersmith (pictured) and Ken McMullen. Messersmith will become the Dodgers ace while Robinson remains a power threat for a couple more years.
