- 1888 - The New York Giants sell John Ward to the Washington Senators for a then-record $12,000. Ward refuses to report to Washington.
- 1943 - Kenesaw Landis rules that William Cox is not eligible to own the Philadelphia Phillies after it is discovered that Cox had bet on his team.
- 1957 - 19-year-old Antonio Diaz throws the last no-hitter in Cuban Winter League history. Diaz is earning just $150 per month at the time.
- 1962 - Maury Wills is named 1962 National League MVP, beating out teammate Tommy Davis (pictured). Wills has just broken Ty Cobb's modern record for stolen bases in a season.
- 1971 - Shortly after having led his team to the 1971 World Series title, Danny Murtaugh steps down as Pittsburgh Pirates manager due to health problems.
- 1993 - Four-time All-Star free agent Hiromi Makihara re-signs with the Yomiuri Giants after manager Shigeo Nagashima shows up at his house with freshly cut roses and a no-trade promise.
