January 5: Today's featured birthday is that of Chris Nabholz, who turns 58.
- 1956 - Dale Long homers for the eighth consecutive game, extending his record. It will not be matched for 31 years when Don Mattingly ties it.
- 1986 - Joe Cowley sets a record that fails to last a year. He strikes out the first seven batters he faces in a game against the Rangers in a 6-3 loss. Jim Deshaies will break the mark on September 23rd.
- 1995 - The Tigers hit seven homers and the White Sox five to set a major league record for homers in a game. Chicago wins, 14-12, despite being outhomered.
- 2003 - Rafael Furcal, Mark DeRosa (pictured) and Gary Sheffield hit three straight homers to start a game against Jeff Austin. It is the second time in major league history that a team has begun with three consecutive jacks.
- 2006 - Barry Bonds hits his 715th career home run, taking Byung-hyun Kim deep. He passes Babe Ruth to move into second place on the all-time leader list.
