January 5: Today's featured birthday is that of Chris Nabholz, who turns 58.
- 1966 - The New York Mets make one of the most notable draft errors ever, selecting Steve Chilcott with the first pick of the 1966 amateur draft, letting Reggie Jackson fall to #2.
- 1973 - Another top pick (David Clyde) is overshadowed by the next few players, as John Stearns goes second in the 1973 amateur draft. Future Hall of Famers Robin Yount and Dave Winfield follow. Clyde and Winfield will go straight to the majors with the Rangers and Padres, respectively.
- 1979 - Charlotte Knights hurler Mike Boddicker fans 18 Knoxville Smokies in an 8-2 win. He sets the Southern League record for strikeouts in a game.
- 1989 - The first game ever played indoors and outdoors takes place as the SkyDome closes its retractable roof in the 5th inning to prevent a rainout. John Cerutti beats Chris Bosio, 4-2, as Ernie Whitt (pictured) drives in three for the Blue Jays.
- 1993 - Cal Eldred matches the quickest start in major league history, with 20 wins in his first 30 games. Three others had done so previously.
