- 1902 - Jay Clarke homers a record eight times to help the Corsicana Oil Citys rout the Texarkana Casketmakers, 51-3 in Texas League action.
- 1938 - Johnny Vander Meer throws his second consecutive no-hitter despite bad control afflicting him, leading to eight walks. He is the only pitcher in major league history to throw back-to-back no-hitters.
- 1964 - The St. Louis Cardinals execute a steal, acquiring Lou Brock from the Chicago Cubs in a trade for Ernie Broglio, Bobby Shantz and Doug Clemens.
- 1973 - Tommie Aaron (pictured) is hired to replace Clint Courtney as manager of the Savannah Braves, becoming the first African-American manager of a club in the Deep South.
- 1992 - Jeff Reardon saves his 342nd game, breaking the record held by Rollie Fingers.
