December 18: Today's featured birthday is that of Steve Hovley, who turns 80.
- 1914 - Babe Ruth makes his major league debut, winning a 4-3 decision as a pitcher. He strikes out in his first at-bat.
- 1950 - The first extra-inning All-Star Game ends in the 14th, won by a Red Schoendienst homer for the NL. The 1950 All-Star Game is the first nationally televised All-Star contest.
- 1961 - Lightweight slow-baller Stu Miller is blown off of the mound during the first 1961 All-Star Game as Candlestick Park's notorious winds strike. Called as a balk, the play allows the American League to tie the game at 3.
- 1985 - Nolan Ryan strikes out Danny Heep to become the first pitcher in major league history with 4,000 strikeouts.
- 2006 - With two out in the 9th, Michael Young (pictured) hits a two-run triple off of Trevor Hoffman to give the AL a 3-2 win in an exciting 2006 All-Star Game. The AL has not lost in the past ten Midsummer Classics.
