December 28: Today's featured birthday is that of Melvin Nieves, who turns 53.
- 1914 - The Chicago Cubs trade Johnny Evers (pictured) to the Boston Braves for Bill Sweeney. Evers will play a key role in leading the "Miracle Braves"" to winning the 1914 World Series.
- 1916 - The Toledo Mud Hens return after a stint in Cleveland, OH. They will take up the name Toledo Iron Men for three years before reverting to the Mud Hens name and have been there since, except for a nine-year break in the 1950s and 1960s.
- 1982 - The St. Louis Cardinals acquire Ozzie Smith from the San Diego Padres for Garry Templeton in a trade of prominent shortstops.
- 1994 - Long-time Milwaukee Brewers star Robin Yount retires after 21 seasons with the club.
- 2001 - Three Rivers Stadium is imploded. It served as the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates for 30 years and will be replaced by PNC Park.
