April 25: Today's featured birthday is that of Bill Greif, who turns 74.

  • 1922 - The Cubs and Phillies combine to set numerous offensive records in a 26-23 Chicago win. They set modern records for runs, hits, most players scoring runs (13 Phillies scored) and most players scoring multiple runs (9 Cubs).
  • 1929 - For the first time, fans in the stands can hear the umpire's calls as Cy Rigler is wired with a microphone connected to speakers.
  • 1978 - Blue Jays coach Don Leppert and Twins coach Jerry Zimmerman serve as umpires thanks to a one-game strike by MLB umpires. It is the first time in 37 years that active coaches or players have umpired a game.
  • 1983 - The Louisville Redbirds (logo pictured) top the one million attendance mark, the first minor league team to do so. They also clinch the American Association East Division title with a win over the Evansville Triplets.
  • 1985 - Dwight Gooden becomes the youngest 20-game winner in MLB history. He is 20 years and 9 months old, one month younger than Bob Feller had been in 1939.
