After his playing career ended, catcher Don Leppert managed the Gastonia Pirates in 1967 and then spent time as a coach with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1968-1973), Toronto Blue Jays (1977-1979), and Houston Astros (1980-1985). Leppert managed the Kenosha Twins in 1986-1987, then became the minor league field coordinator for the Minnesota Twins. He was inducted into the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003.
When the major league umpires staged a one-day strike on August 25, 1978, Leppert and Minnesota Twins coach Jerry Zimmerman were pressed into duty to help out the three amateur umpires working that day's game. Leppert umpired at second base and Zimmerman at third base. The problem was that the American League had only managed to round up three amateur umpires at short notice, and one of them, Rich Panas showed up late; rather than play with only two umpires, both teams provided a coach to help out. When Panas arrived, he worked the game in left field.
