Originally selected by the Texas Rangers in the 20th round of the 1990 amateur draft, Kubinski did not sign, opting to attend UCLA instead. He was then chosen by the A's in the seventh round of the 1993 amateur draft and made his pro debut that summer. He reached the majors with Oakland in 1997, making his big league debut against the Kansas City Royals on July 16th. Entering the game in the 8th inning, he retired Scott Cooper, the only batter he faced. In 11 relief outing for the Athletics that year, he posted a 5.68 ERA.
After spending the entire 1998 campaign with the AAA Edmonton Trappers, Kubinski got into 14 games with the A's in 1999, recording a 5.84 ERA. He spent the next year back at the AAA level in the Oakland chain and then played briefly in the independent leagues.
