- 1901 - The American League opens its first season as a major league. Roy Patterson pitches the Chicago White Stockings past the Cleveland Blues, 8-2.
- 1945 - Major League Baseball gets its second commissioner when Senator Happy Chandler (pictured) is voted in to replace the deceased Kenesaw Mountain Landis.
- 1946 - The floodgates are opened for the Hall of Fame as 11 players, some of dubious quality, are elected by the Old Timers Committee.
- 1947 - Johnny Mize sets a record with the fifth three-homer game of his career. The Giants still fall, 14-5, to Johnny Sain and the Braves.
- 1957 - In a wild 5th inning, the Cubs walk nine Reds batters to set a National League record. Moe Drabowsky (4), Jackie Collum (3) and Jim Brosnan (2) are involved in the giveaway.
