- 1869 - In the first professional baseball game, the Cincinnati Red Stockings beat the Cincinnati Amateurs, 24-15.
- 1945 - Pete Gray (pictured) debuts, getting one hit. The one-armed outfielder had starred in the Southern Association in 1944.
- 1956 - Three future Hall of Fame members all debut today as Frank Robinson, Don Drysdale and Luis Aparicio all play their first game in the major leagues.
- 1960 - In a major trade, the Detroit Tigers send batting titlist Harvey Kuenn to the Cleveland Indians for slugger Rocky Colavito.
- 2012 - 49-year-old Jamie Moyer becomes the oldest pitcher to win a game in the majors, breaking Jack Quinn's 80-year-old record.
